Black bear attacks against humans are extremely rare, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't take precautions to protect themselves.

Authorities advise:

  • Never feed or approach a bear;
  • Avoidi direct eye contact, which may be perceived as a challenge;
  • Never run from a bear -- back away slowly;
  • Never corner a bear.

A bear may utter a series of huffs, make popping signs by snapping its jaws and swatting the ground -- these are warning signs that you are too close, experts say.

Slowly back away, avoid eye contact -- and do not run.
